והוה כד אתא דוד וגברוהי לצקלג ביומא תליתאה ועמלקאה אתנגידו על דרום ועל צקלג ואוקידו יתה בנורא:
bnwra ythh wawqydw tsqlg wel drwm el athngydw wemlqah thlythah bywma ltsqlg wgbrwhy dwd atha kd whwh
When David and his men had come to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the South and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire,

ושבו ית נשיא די בה מזעירא ועד רבא ולא קטלו אנש ודברו ואזלו לאורחיהון:
lawrkhyhwn wazlw wdbrw ansh qTlw wla rba wed mzeyra bh dy nshya yth wshbw
and had taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They didn’t kill any, but carried them off and went their way.

ואתא דוד וגברוהי לקרתא והא קליא בנורא ונשיהון ובניהון ובנתיהון אשתביאו:
ashthbyaw wbnthyhwn wbnyhwn wnshyhwn bnwra qlya wha lqrtha wgbrwhy dwd watha
When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive.

וארים דוד ועמא די עמיה ית קלהון ובכו עד דלא הוה בהון חילא למבכי:
lmbky khyla bhwn hwh dla ed wbkw qlhwn yth emyh dy wema dwd warym
Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep.

ותרתין נשי דוד אשתביאה אחינועם דמיזרעאל ואביגיל אתת נבל דמכרמלא:
dmkrmla nbl athth wabygyl dmyzreal akhynwem ashthbyah dwd nshy wthrthyn
David’s two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

ועקת לדוד לחדא ארי אמרו עמא למרגמיה ארי מרת נפשא דכל עמא גבר על בנוהי ועל בנתיה ואתקיף דוד במימרא דיי אלהיה:
alhyh dyy bmymra dwd wathqyp bnthyh wel bnwhy el gbr ema dkl npsha mrth ary lmrgmyh ema amrw ary lkhda ldwd weqth
David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

ואמר דוד לאביתר כהנא בר אחימלך קריב כען לי אפודא וקריב אביתר ית אפודא לדוד:
ldwd apwda yth abythr wqryb apwda ly ken qryb akhymlk br khna labythr dwd wamr
David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

ושאיל דוד במימרא דיי למימר ארדוף בתר משריתא הדא האדבקיניה ואמר ליה רדוף ארי אדביק תדביק ושיזבא תשיזיב:
thshyzyb wshyzba thdbyq adbyq ary rdwp lyh wamr hadbqynyh hda mshrytha bthr ardwp lmymr dyy bmymra dwd wshayl
David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “If I pursue after this troop, will I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you will surely overtake them, and will without fail recover all.”

ואזל דוד הוא ושית מאה גברא די עמיה ואתו עד נחלא דבשור ומקצתהון אשתארו:
ashtharw wmqtsthhwn dbshwr nkhla ed wathw emyh dy gbra mah wshyth hwa dwd wazl
So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed.

ורדף דוד הוא וארבע מאה גברא ואשתארון מאתן גברא דאתמנעו מלמעבר ית נחל דבשור:
dbshwr nkhl yth mlmebr dathmnew gbra mathn washtharwn gbra mah warbe hwa dwd wrdp
But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so faint that they couldn’t go over the brook Besor.

ואשכחו גברא מצראה בחקלא ואיתיאו יתיה לות דוד ויהבו ליה לחמא ואכל ואשקיוהי מיא:
mya washqywhy wakl lkhma lyh wyhbw dwd lwth ythyh waythyaw bkhqla mtsrah gbra washkkhw
They found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they gave him water to drink.

ויהבו ליה פילס דבלתא ותרין איתכלין דעינבין יבישין ואכל ותבת רוחיה ליה ארי לא אכל לחמא ולא שתא מיא תלתא יממין ותלתא לילון:
lylwn wthltha ymmyn thltha mya shtha wla lkhma akl la ary lyh rwkhyh wthbth wakl ybyshyn deynbyn aythklyn wthryn dbltha pyls lyh wyhbw
They gave him a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. When he had eaten, his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread, and drank no water for three days and three nights.

ואמר ליה דוד דמן את ואי מדין את ואמר עולימא מצראה אנא עבדא לגברא עמלקאה ושבקני רבוני ארי אתמרעית יומא דין דנן תלתא יומין:
ywmyn thltha dnn dyn ywma athmreyth ary rbwny wshbqny emlqah lgbra ebda ana mtsrah ewlyma wamr ath mdyn way ath dmn dwd lyh wamr
David asked him, “To whom do you belong? Where are you from?” He said, “I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I got sick.

אנחנא אתנגידנא על דרומא כרית ועל די ליהודה ועל דרום כלב וית צקלג אוקידנא בנורא:
bnwra awqydna tsqlg wyth klb drwm wel lyhwdh dy wel kryth drwma el athngydna ankhna
We made a raid on the South of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the South of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”

ואמר ליה דוד התחתינני למשריתא הדא ואמר קים לי במימרא דיי דלא תקטלינני ולא תמסרינני בידא דרבוני ואחתינך למשריתא הדא:
hda lmshrytha wakhthynk drbwny byda thmsrynny wla thqTlynny dla dyy bmymra ly qym wamr hda lmshrytha hthkhthynny dwd lyh wamr
David said to him, “Will you bring me down to this troop?” He said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me and not deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this troop.”

ואחתיה והא רטישין על אפי כל ארעא אכלין ושתן וחגגין בכל עדאה סגיאה דשבו מארעא פלשתאי ומארעא דבית יהודה:
yhwdh dbyth wmarea plshthay marea dshbw sgyah edah bkl wkhggyn wshthn aklyn area kl apy el rTyshyn wha wakhthyh
When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread around over all the ground, eating, drinking, and dancing, because of all the great plunder that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

ומחנון דוד מקבלא ועד עדן רמשא ביומא דבתרוהי ולא אשתיזיב מנהון אנש אלהין ארבע מאה גבר עולים דרכיבו על גמליא ואפיכו:
wapykw gmlya el drkybw ewlym gbr mah arbe alhyn ansh mnhwn ashthyzyb wla dbthrwhy bywma rmsha edn wed mqbla dwd wmkhnwn
David struck them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped from there, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.

ושיזיב דוד ית כל דשבו עמלקאי וית תרתין נשוהי שיזיב דוד:
dwd shyzyb nshwhy thrthyn wyth emlqay dshbw kl yth dwd wshyzyb
David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and David rescued his two wives.
19
ולא שגא להון מן זעירא ועד רבא ועד בנין ובנן ומביזתא ועד כל די נסיבו להון כולא אתיב דוד:
dwd athyb kwla lhwn nsybw dy kl wed wmbyztha wbnn bnyn wed rba wed zeyra mn lhwn shga wla
There was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither plunder, nor anything that they had taken. David brought them all back.
20
ושבא דוד ית כל ענא ותורי דברו קדם גיתיא האינון ואמרו דין עדהא דדוד:
ddwd edha dyn wamrw haynwn gythya qdm dbrw wthwry ena kl yth dwd wshba
David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s plunder.”

ואתא דוד לות מאתן גברא דאתמניעו מלמיזל בתר דוד ואותיבינון בנחלא דבשור ונפקו לקדמות דוד ולקדמות עמא דעמיה וארע דוד ית עמא ושאיל להון לשלם:
lshlm lhwn wshayl ema yth dwd ware demyh ema wlqdmwth dwd lqdmwth wnpqw dbshwr bnkhla wawthybynwn dwd bthr mlmyzl dathmnyew gbra mathn lwth dwd watha
David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went out to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them.

ואתיב כל גבר ביש ורשיעא מגבריא דאזלו עם דוד ואמר חלף דלא אזלו עמי לא נתן להון מעדאה דשיזבנא אלהין גבר ית אתתיה וית בנוהי וידברון ויזלון:
wyzlwn wydbrwn bnwhy wyth aththyh yth gbr alhyn dshyzbna medah lhwn nthn la emy azlw dla khlp wamr dwd em dazlw mgbrya wrshyea bysh gbr kl wathyb
Then all the wicked men and worthless fellows of those who went with David answered and said, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give them anything of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away and depart.”

ואמר דוד לא תעבדון כן אחי ית דיהב יי לנא ונטר יתנא ומסר ית משריתא דאתת עלנא בידנא:
bydna elna dathth mshrytha yth wmsr ythna wnTr lna yy dyhb yth akhy kn thebdwn la dwd wamr
Then David said, “Do not do so, my brothers, with that which Yahweh has given to us, who has preserved us, and delivered the troop that came against us into our hand.

ומן ישמע לכון לפתגמא הדין ארי כחולק דנחתו בקרבא וכחולק דאשתארו למטר מניא כחדא יפלגון:
yplgwn kkhda mnya lmTr dashtharw wkkhwlq bqrba dnkhthw kkhwlq ary hdyn lpthgma lkwn yshme wmn
Who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays with the baggage. They shall share alike.”

והוה מיומא ההוא ולעלא שויה לגזירת דין לישראל עד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma ed lyshral dyn lgzyrth shwyh wlela hhwa mywma whwh
It was so from that day forward that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

ואתא דוד לצקלג ושדר מבזתא לסבי יהודה לרחמוהי למימר הא לכון מתנא מבזת סנאי עמא דיי:
dyy ema snay mbzth mthna lkwn ha lmymr lrkhmwhy yhwdh lsby mbztha wshdr ltsqlg dwd watha
When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of Yahweh’s enemies.”

לדי בבית אל ולדי ברמות נגב ולדי ביתר:
bythr wldy ngb brmwth wldy al bbyth ldy
He sent it to those who were in Bethel, to those who were in Ramoth of the South, to those who were in Jattir,
28
ולדי בערוער ולדי בשפמות ולדי באשתמע:
bashthme wldy bshpmwth wldy berwer wldy
to those who were in Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in Eshtemoa,
29
ולדי ברכל ולדי בקרוי ירחמאל ולדי בקרוי שלמאה:
shlmah bqrwy wldy yrkhmal bqrwy wldy brkl wldy
to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,
30
ולדי בחרמה ולדי בכור עשן ולדי בעתך:
bethk wldy eshn bkwr wldy bkhrmh wldy
to those who were in Hormah, to those who were in Borashan, to those who were in Athach,
31
ולדי בחברון ולכל אתריא די הליך תמן דוד הוא וגברוהי:
wgbrwhy hwa dwd thmn hlyk dy athrya wlkl bkhbrwn wldy
to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.
